TheFappening, an infamous event from 2014, occurred when nude photographs of famous celebrities were made public after stolen from their personal iCloud accounts. Dubbed “the largest celebrity hack ever” by the media, TheFappening shocked those in the spotlight and fans alike – to this day the culprit responsible has never been found.
Since then, viewing and sharing these photos has become somewhat of a taboo subject, with many disapproving of their dissemination on websites such as Reddit. On the other hand, some people argue that the right to privacy shouldn’t come at the expense of public interest – if someone chooses to take part in celebrity culture then they should expect a certain level of intrusion.
Either way, rapid advancements in technology have ushered us into strange new waters – it’s now easier than ever for malicious hackers to access sensitive information on social media and cloud networking websites. This isn’t confined to famous people either; everyday users are vulnerable too as hackers are always coming up with new ways of exploiting weak points in user interfaces or hardware devices.
It’s therefore wise for anyone using online services such as iCloud or Google Drive to take measures like remembering passwords or enabling two-factor authentication. When taking pictures for personal use- make sure you’re comfortable with them being seen by others just in case – and if needed save them onto a device that is not connected to any online services like computers or USB drives. Furthermore it’s advised to regularly update your system as software patches often eradicate common vulnerabilities which can be explored by criminals seeking access to private information.
It goes without saying that whether you’re famous or not, any type of Internet invasion is extremely unsettling and we all need to take steps towards protecting our data – Prevention is always better than cure after all!
